Bribery Scandal Rocks Nigerian Police Service Commission as Officers Pay $10,000 for Promotion

A major bribery scandal has emerged in the Nigerian Police Service Commission, as allegations have surfaced that officers are paying up to $10,000 to secure a promotion within the force. The scandal has caused widespread concern among senior officers, who are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the situation.

The allegations of bribery have been made by aggrieved officers who claim that the Police Service Commission has been promoting junior officers ahead of their seniors after accepting bribes. In a statement released by Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo on behalf of other officers, it was claimed that there are numerous cases of corrupt practices and injustices going on within the force, which require the attention of the presidency.

The statement detailed the specifics of the alleged corruption, stating that senior officers are being overlooked in favor of their junior counterparts, with some officers being promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner despite only recently having been promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police. The statement claimed that these promotions were granted after the officers paid a bribe of $10,000 to individuals within the Police Service Commission, who then backdated their dates of promotion under the guise of community recommendations.

The statement further highlighted the negative impact that these corrupt practices are having on the police force, stating that they are causing a lack of commitment and competence among officers, and have generated rancor within the force headquarters. The Inspector General of Police is said to be taken aback by the allegations, and senior officers are calling for an urgent re-organization of the Police Service Commission, with corrupt-free and God-fearing individuals being appointed as commissioners.

The bribery scandal has caused widespread concern in Nigeria, with many calling for swift action to be taken to investigate the allegations and bring those responsible to justice. It remains to be seen what actions the presidency will take in response to the allegations, and how the police force will be reorganized to prevent such corrupt practices in the future.
