INEC states that securing 25% of votes in FCT unnecessary for winning presidential election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that in Nigeria's presidential elections, a candidate does not need to secure 25% of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to emerge victorious.

This statement was made in response to the controversy surrounding the validity of the February 25th election, where the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, was unable to meet the constitutional requirements for victory.

The commission also dismissed the petition of the Labour Party's Peter Obi as incompetent. However, it confirmed the election of the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu, as valid. Despite the requirement for a 25% vote in the FCT not being necessary for victory, the commission maintains that other constitutional requirements must still be met for a candidate to be declared the winner of the presidential election in Nigeria.
