Peter Obi Detained and Harassed by UK Immigration Officials at Heathrow Airport

Former Nigerian Governor and Presidential Candidate Peter Obi was Detained and Harassed by UK Immigration Officials at Heathrow Airport

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, was reportedly detained and harassed by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in London. The incident occurred on April 7, 2023, when Obi arrived in London from Nigeria on Good Friday.

According to Diran Onifade, the spokesman for the party’s Campaign Council, Obi was handed a detention note by immigration officials while he was waiting in line for the necessary airport protocols. He was then questioned for a long time on suspicion of a duplication offense, which suggested that someone had been impersonating him in London.

Onifade expressed concern that Obi could be implicated in a series of forbidden acts and even framed in a manner that could be a huge embarrassment to him, his family, his party, the Obidient Movement, and Nigeria, where he currently and indisputably remains the conscience of the people.

The immigration officials were reportedly taken aback at the reaction of the people and were forced to reveal that Obi was being questioned for a ‘duplication offense’. This offense could have serious implications, as the impersonator could be committing all kinds of weighty crimes and other dubious acts in Obi’s name.

The incident comes a week after the federal government accused Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, of inciting people to violence following the outcome of the February 25 presidential election. Obi, who came third in the election, has gone to court to challenge the victory of the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
