Embattled official, David Coote faces fresh controversy as FA launches probe into pre-match booking discussion claims.
The Football Association has initiated an investigation regarding allegations that Premier League official David Coote discussed issuing a yellow card to a player prior to a match.
The inquiry focuses on a Championship fixture between Leeds and West Bromwich that took place in October 2019.
The Sun reports that Coote engaged in text communications with an acquaintance where they discussed the possibility of Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski receiving a booking during the match at Elland Road.
In the game's 18th minute, Coote showed Alioski a yellow card following his sliding challenge on West Brom's Darnell Furlong.
Reports indicate Coote messaged his acquaintance the next day stating: 'What a day yesterday. I hope you followed through as discussed.'
The FA confirmed on Tuesday evening that they are examining these claims.
'We are treating these allegations with utmost seriousness and conducting an urgent investigation,' their statement declared.
According to The Sun, Coote maintains his innocence and there's no evidence suggesting he received any financial benefit. The booking decision is also considered legitimate given the tackle's nature.
Coote reportedly claims the exchange was merely friendly banter, dismissing allegations of impropriety.
During their communication, Coote allegedly informed the Leeds supporter about his upcoming role as referee for their Championship clash against the Baggies.
Reports suggest the supporter playfully suggested Coote book Alioski during the match, enabling him to place a pre-game wager.
The night before the match, the acquaintance responded to Coote's message saying: 'Oooh big game. Are we proceeding as discussed? Maybe I could if so.'
Coote answered: 'Haha I don't know what you mean.'
The acquaintance continued: 'Haha, well I'm placing the bet tomorrow morning so don't disappoint.'
'Haha we'll see,' Coote responded.
The 18th minute saw Coote issue Alioski a yellow card following his sliding challenge on West Brom's Darnell Furlong.
Alioski later became the game's hero, scoring the decisive goal in Leeds' 1-0 victory at Elland Road.
Post-match, Coote messaged his acquaintance: 'What a day yesterday. I hope you backed as discussed.'
The Leeds supporter revealed he hadn't placed the bet, though mentioned another friend had done so.
'Haha he'll need to split it with you then,' came Coote's response.
Speaking to The Sun on Tuesday, Coote stated: 'Personal challenges I've faced have never compromised my on-field decision-making.
