Kwara School Teachers Allegedly Assault NYSC Corps Member Over Greeting Incident
A disturbing incident occurred in Ilorin, Kwara State, where a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was allegedly assaulted by teachers at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende. The altercation reportedly arose when the corps member was accused of not greeting the teachers "properly" while visiting the school to collect her clearance letter.
According to eyewitness accounts, one of the teachers allegedly tore the corps member’s NYSC T-shirt, while another joined in by slapping her. The incident, which took place on November 28, 2024, has drawn widespread condemnation and prompted immediate action from authorities.
The NYSC Kwara State Coordinator, through its spokesperson Morakinyo Oladipo, confirmed the incident and expressed the scheme’s displeasure. Oladipo assured the public that the NYSC is working to ensure justice for the corps member, including informing the Kwara State Ministry of Youth, the supervising body for such matters.
In the interim, the NYSC has taken steps to relocate the corps member to a different location to help her recover from the trauma. Oladipo further emphasized that the scheme is actively collaborating with the state government to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The Kwara State Government, represented by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, has strongly condemned the actions of the teachers. In a statement, the Commissioner described the behavior as unacceptable, stressing that Kwara State is committed to maintaining harmony and ensuring the safety of all corps members and students in its institutions.
An investigative team, including representatives from the state’s Ministry of Education, has visited the school to assess the situation and restore calm. The Commissioner assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against those found guilty of the assault.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media and beyond, with many Nigerians calling for stricter protections for corps members during their service year. Critics have pointed out the need for better oversight in schools hosting NYSC members and questioned the prevalence of unprofessional behavior in educational institutions.
Authorities have confirmed that the accused teachers are under investigation, and appropriate actions will be taken in line with existing laws. Assaulting an NYSC member is considered a serious offense, and those involved could face both criminal charges and administrative sanctions.
