Florida Man Accused of Christmas Day Assault on Wife Amid ‘Financial and Health Turmoil’
A chilling incident unfolded in Florida on December 25, where authorities allege that 78-year-old Jonathan McPhee attempted to murder his wife, Aileen McPhee, citing severe financial and health challenges as contributing factors.
According to a criminal affidavit acquired by JARATVENT, Jonathan purportedly struck Aileen in the head with a sledgehammer while she was asleep in their residence.
The accused then contacted emergency services, reportedly confessing, "I struck her, and I intend to stab myself in the heart," as per the document.
Before authorities arrived, Jonathan allegedly sent a message to Aileen’s daughter, proclaiming he had "killed" her mother and intended to end his own life due to their ongoing struggles with money and health. The message also included detailed instructions regarding funeral arrangements and life insurance, as noted in official reports.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement discovered Jonathan outside the home, suffering from a self-inflicted knife wound. Inside the residence, Aileen was located with grievous head injuries. The sledgehammer used in the assault was found on the bed, as outlined in the complaint.
Both individuals were transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital for treatment. While under medical care, Jonathan reportedly expressed remorse, saying, "Just let me die. I killed my wife."
Later that day, Jonathan was formally apprehended and charged with first-degree attempted murder. He remains in custody as of Sunday, December 29, according to jail records.
It is unclear whether Jonathan has secured legal counsel to represent him.
In an interview with CBS affiliate WTSP, family acquaintance John McCann commented on the incident, stating, “Jonathan has been deeply troubled, grappling with profound despair. Whatever transpired must have pushed him into a catastrophic mental breakdown, leading to this tragic act.”
