Gianluca Di Gioia, a European Union official, tragically lost his life in a tiger shark attack near Egypt’s Marsa Alam resort.

A serene vacation in Egypt’s Marsa Alam resort was upended by tragedy when 48-year-old Gianluca Di Gioia, a resident of Rome, lost his life to a tiger shark attack in the Red Sea. The incident unfolded on Sunday, December 22, just one day after Di Gioia celebrated his birthday with loved ones.

The fateful encounter occurred in waters beyond the designated swimming area, as confirmed by the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment. Witnesses describe a horrifying scene, with Di Gioia’s wife, standing helplessly on the shore, crying out for assistance as the predator struck.

A 69-year-old friend of Di Gioia displayed remarkable courage, diving into the depths in an effort to save him. Despite sustaining minor injuries himself, the friend’s efforts were in vain, leaving onlookers and family members devastated.

Di Gioia’s lifeless body was later recovered and transported to the mortuary at Port Ghalib hospital. The Egyptian authorities have since cordoned off the area, restricting access until January 1, as part of an ongoing investigation into the tragic event.

Born in Italy but residing in France, Di Gioia’s professional life reflected his commitment to global cooperation. An official with the European External Action Service since 2012, he played a pivotal role within the European Union framework.

Married in 2013, Di Gioia and his wife had built a life centered on family and professional dedication. Now, in the wake of his untimely passing, the Italian Embassy in Cairo is offering support to his grieving family.

As authorities continue their investigation, the resort community mourns the loss of a man who embodied dedication and love for those around him.
