In an unsettling twist, a second-grade student, merely seven or eight years old, was the first to alert authorities, dialing 911 to report the active shooter. The investigation has yet to uncover the motives behind the perpetrator's actions. However, Chief Barnes confirmed that the family of the assailant, identified as Natalie Rupnow, who also went by the alias Samantha, is cooperating with authorities. Preliminary findings suggest that Rupnow's death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though the official cause will be determined following an autopsy by the Dane County Medical Examiner.

While the majority of school shooters are young males, at least four planned attacks involving female assailants date back to 1979.
