Andrew Garfield Dismisses Speculation of Return in Spider-Man 4 but Acknowledges Skepticism Surrounding His Statements
Andrew Garfield has categorically stated he is not reprising his role as Spider-Man in an upcoming fourth installment. However, he humorously acknowledged the trust deficit his previous denials created among fans.
“I’m going to disappoint you,” the 41-year-old actor revealed in an interview with GQ on January 2, when confronted about rumors of his appearance in another Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland. “Yeah, no. But I understand that no one’s going to believe anything I say anymore.”
Garfield’s comments stem from his repeated denials about being involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home prior to its theatrical release in 2021. Ultimately, the film featured Garfield reprising his portrayal of Peter Parker from The Amazing Spider-Man series alongside Tobey Maguire in a multiverse-themed storyline.
While Garfield denied current plans for a return, he outlined conditions under which he might don the Spider-Man suit again.
“If it felt aligned with my essence and promised to be enjoyable,” he elaborated. “Perhaps someday I’ll have a brood of children and need to start preparing for their education.”
In October, Garfield shared with JARATVENT that it would take a “remarkable concept or an innovative idea” for him to revisit the iconic role. He explained, “It has to be unexpected, intriguing, and brimming with joy. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be worth exploring.”
Reflecting on his involvement in No Way Home, Garfield praised the vision behind the film. “I’m so delighted they had the audacity to create something so inventive. It’s brilliant,” he said. “I never would have envisioned that possibility, and I’m proud to have contributed to it. If another opportunity arose that felt like an enriching addition to Spider-Man’s legacy, I’d consider it.”
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man made his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, leading to solo ventures like Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Holland confirmed that a fourth movie is in the works during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in October 2024.
“Production starts next summer, and everything is nearly finalized,” the 28-year-old actor shared enthusiastically. “I’m beyond excited.”
Garfield, last seen on the big screen in We Live in Time (2021), is set to star alongside Julia Roberts in Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt. Meanwhile, Holland will headline Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, further diversifying his cinematic repertoire.
The Spider-Man universe remains a space of boundless creativity, but for now, fans will have to wait and see if Garfield’s web-slinging days are truly behind him.
