Derrick Ward, an esteemed journalist whose career spanned decades, has passed away at the age of 62. NBC 4 Washington, the station where Ward built a lasting legacy, confirmed his passing on January 8.

Ward’s family revealed that he succumbed on January 7 due to complications arising from a recent cardiac arrest. In a heartfelt statement, they expressed, “Derrick has been an inspiration and cherished member of our family and his hometown community. As a seasoned reporter with News4 Washington and previously WTOP Radio, his storytelling, prolific writing, warmth, and humor touched innumerable lives.”

Derrick Ward’s illustrious journey began in radio, where his resonant voice captivated audiences. He worked with esteemed outlets such as WPFW, WAMU, and WTOP, delivering news with both gravitas and grace. His career evolved to television, starting with WKBW-TV in Buffalo, where he first stepped in front of the camera.

In 2006, Ward returned to his roots in Washington, D.C., joining NBC 4 and becoming an integral part of the newsroom. His journalistic repertoire included coverage of pivotal moments in history, such as the Iran-Contra hearings, the September 11 attacks at the Pentagon, and the Washington-area sniper incidents.
