Texas Megachurch Pastor Robert Morris Admits to Past 'Inappropriate Sexual Behavior' Amid Allegations
Gateway Church Pastor Robert Morris acknowledges past inappropriate conduct after a woman alleges abuse starting at age 12.
In a statement obtained by WFAA, Morris acknowledged misconduct with a "young lady" during his early twenties but denied identifying Clemishire or confirming her specific allegations. He described the behavior as "kissing and petting," which he classified as "wrong" but clarified it did not include intercourse.
Morris stated the behavior came to light in March 1987 and was addressed through confession and repentance. “I submitted myself to the Elders of Shady Grove Church and the young lady’s father,” he explained. Following the incident, Morris stepped away from ministry and underwent professional counseling as part of a church-administered restoration process.
According to Gateway Church, Morris underwent a rigorous two-year restoration process, which included professional counseling and oversight by church elders. In their statement, the church emphasized Morris's transparency, highlighting that he had openly shared his journey of repentance from the pulpit.
“The moral failure occurred over 35 years ago, and Pastor Robert has demonstrated accountability and purity in this area since that time,” Gateway Church stated.
Clemishire, however, maintains that while her family forgave Morris in 1989, they opposed his return to ministry. Speaking to WFAA, Clemishire reiterated her belief that individuals guilty of such misconduct should not serve in spiritual leadership roles.
Founded by Morris in 2000, Gateway Church has grown to become one of the largest churches in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with multiple campuses and a substantial following. The allegations and Morris's admission have sparked discussions about accountability and the ethical standards for leaders in faith communities.
This case has brought renewed focus on supporting survivors of abuse. Resources like the Crisis Text Line (text "STRENGTH" to 741-741) are available to anyone seeking help.
